Well, by golly Fall has made its appearance here in the Mission Valley. The last six weeks has been full of mild beautiful days. The birds have flying and singing at both ends of the day. The cows have begun growing their winter coats. All the preparation has come into fruition with this weekend’s storm. As I was checking the herd this morning the clouds could not make up their mind if they wanted to send down rain or snow. This change of seasons is well received. We have been keeping up a good pace around the farm as of late. With the warm mild days we have completing “Fall Projects” such as irrigation repairs and retiring machinery with a deep wash and putting in our winter storage barn. The cows have been benefiting from the grass produced from this Fall’s weather. Though we have not received much rain as of late, the cold mornings with heavy dews have provided enough moisture for the grasses to grow well with the afternoon heat. A big project we have this coming week is to sort of the calves from their mothers and ship them to Great Falls. We will keep a select few of the calves to raise on our farm for feature finishing steers and heifers that will contribute to our calving herd. Shipping off claves will offer more simplification to our chores as we will have roughly three hundred less animals on our pasture. Justin and I spent last week discussing our plan and strategies to set up the corrals in a way that will allow us to sort off the calves in the least stressful and most efficient manner. I believe we have a solid strategy. Stay tuned for next week as I will report back to how it goes. Thank you for reading and happy trails to you all! Cheers, Braden.
